Sheriff’s Department offers Guns for Gift Cards event

Anyone with an unwanted gun can turn it in to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in exchange for a gift card, no questions asked, on Nov. 30.

The sheriff’s department will host a Guns for Gift Cards event from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the San Elijo campus of Mira Costa Community College, 3333 Manchester Ave., Cardiff.

Gift cards, redeemable at area Walmarts, will amount to $100 per handgun and $150 per rifle. There is a limit of three gift cards per vehicle. Those participating should place the unloaded firearms in the trunk of their cars and a uniformed deputy or officer will give instructions at the location. All weapons collected will be destroyed, said the sheriff’s department.

The gift cards will be purchased using $15,000 in asset forfeiture funds from the sheriff’s department and $5,000 in asset forfeiture funds from the district attorney’s office.
