Ramona NJROTC drill season kicks off in Coronado

By Wesley Richardson

Although the school year only recently started, Ramona High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps has already made quite the impact. They have gone to numerous events throughout San Diego and Orange counties while compiling a bounty of trophies.

Their athletic season started at Troy High School’s Annual Athletic Field Meet, where 80 cadets departed for Fullerton to show other schools what Ramona is made of. After a long day, Ramona brought home 12 trophies, including first in Extreme Leapfrog, Boardwalk and the 12-by-100-yard relay, which culminated in an overall finish of second place out of 26 schools.

On Sept. 7, there was a much smaller meet, the Neptune Olympics at Fiddler’s Cove in Coronado bay. Events included a Boat Race, Paddle Boarding and Kayaking. The eight cadets who participated won four awards, which added up to a second place trophy, beating 15 other schools.

Many new cadets accompanied by some older ones decided to spend a weekend at Mar Vista High School to learn basic military drill and leadership traits. After 28 hours of work, the 23 cadets graduated with a great deal of new knowledge. Also, the Naval Science 1’s wore their uniforms for the first time at this year’s Installation of Cadets, where Commanding Officer Carlo Silva commissioned four platoons into service.

The 135-member NJROTC unit is the largest in RHS’ history.

With a great start to the year, NJROTC is not slowing down. Many events are planned for the upcoming months. On Nov. 9, they have their annual Veterans Day Salute to Military. Everyone is invited to this celebration of Ramona’s fallen heroes. It will take place in the Ramona High School gymnasium and will be followed by a spaghetti dinner. Make sure to come join us in honoring those brave solders.

The company’s drill season will kick off Nov. 16 at Coronado High School’s Area 11 qualifier meet.
