Girls soccer team spends summer playing in College Showcase tournaments
The Girls Under 17 Arsenal Futbol Club (FC), formally Ramona FC, soccer team spent its summer traveling to high-level College Showcase tournaments in preparation for premier level play this fall season.
“Many of the players are looking to play in college and this is an excellent opportunity for the girls to be seen by hundreds of college coaches from around the nation,” explained Coach Justin “JJ” Jordan.
In June, the girls attended the Arsenal FC Summer Classic in Riverside with a 2-1-0 record, succumbing to an Arsenal National team (0-3) and Strikers FC from Cerritos’ Premier Development National Team (1-0), and winning against Temecula Valley Hawks (3-1).
In July, the girls participated in the SoCal Summer Showcase at Cal Poly Pomona. With game temperatures over 100 degrees, the girls lost their first game to LA Premier FC (1-2), and beat Corinthians SC (2-0) and a different Strikers FC team from Cerritos (2-1).
Also in July, the team traveled to Pleasanton in northern California to participate in one of the largest tournaments on the west coast, the Rage College Showcase where college coaches and scouts from UC Davis, Cal Berkeley, Humboldt, University of Pacific/Hawaii, and many other large universities were present. This tournament included ranked teams from northern California and Washington. Most teams ranked in the top 50 for their state.
“I am very proud of this team. They played well and stepped up against premier level teams. I am excited to be a part of the Arsenal Club and provide these opportunities for our Ramona players,” said Jordan.
The Arsenal FC girls finished the showcase with a 1-1-2 record, losing 0-3 to Orchard Valley YSL Chaos (Morgan Hill, Calif.), tying 1-1 with Sacramento United Spitfire, winning 2-1 against Turlock FC Tornados (Sacramento), and tying 0-0 with FC Alliance (Woodinville, Wash.).
At the end of July, the team was invited to play at Del Mar’s Surf Cup in a friendly match against San Diego United. The game was viewed by college coaches from California, Colorado, Maryland, Hawaii and Utah. In addition to regular training, several of the girls attended college camps at UCSD, USD, and Arsenal.
This weekend the girls play in San Diego in the Attack Tournament at Torrey Pines.
