Ramona’s ‘four best days of summer’ start Thursday

Wednesday, July 24—Ramona Country Fair, frequently touted as The Four Best Days of Summer, starts Thursday, with something for everyone in the family.

The 43rd annual fair, presented by Ramona Chamber of Commerce, promises more pizzazz and participation as organizers add contests with an old-fashioned country fair flavor.

“We’re getting back to some of the basics of what a country fair was,” said Bob Murray, chamber president. “I’m excited. This is going to be a good one.”

“Only in Ramona can you experience a country fair that offers so much for so little — or nothing,” said Sally Westbrook, chamber secretary.

The summer celebration comes with carnival rides, game booths, the 7th Annual Ramona Idol Contest, rows of vendors, lots of traditional fair food, live entertainment, a petting zoo, a Beer & Wine Garden — and contests galore.

Each day of the fair has a different theme. Admission is free and all activities will be at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, 421 Aqua Lane.

Take your pick of contests. As Westbrook says, “there’s something for everyone: Foto Friday competition; Jams, Jelly and Honey Contest for those special homemakers who love to make homemade goods; dance contest for those who think they can dance country western; and frozen T-shirt contests and a pie eating contest.” In addition, there’s live music and dance bands Friday and Saturday nights — “and it’s all free,” said Westbrook.

Photo contest winners will be announced on Friday at 5:15 p.m. in the ROCC Pavilion, where the photographs will be displayed. First-, second- and third-pace winners in each age category will receive ribbons.

Entries in the Home Sweet Home Jam, Jelly and Honey Contest will be accepted in the pavilion area by 9 a.m. on Saturday. Judging will take place at noon.

Entrants are to label each entry with their name, type of entry and flavor. First-, second- and third-place ribbons will go to the top three overall. Winners will be announced at 4 p.m. at the pavilion.

The Saturday Night Country Dancing Contest will be at 8:30. Winners will receive a glitter ball trophy and an overnight stay with breakfast for two at San Vicente Resort. Sponsoring the dance contest prizes are Westbrook and San Vicente Resort.

Live music is planned July 26, 27 and 28, with Classic Buzz playing at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, The Nobles at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Whiskey Ridge at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the Ramona Unified School District Band
