Ramona High School’s boys swim team placed 11th at the CIF meet May 19 at Granite Hills High School while junior Garrett Glaudini broke his own school record in the 500-yard freestyle race.
“It was a tremendous conclusion to the season,” said coach Jolyn Yanez.
The CIF meet included the May 15 preliminaries at Granite Hills as well as the finals. Glaudini broke his 2012 500-yard freestyle school record of 4:34.54 at the preliminaries with a time of 4:32.65, which placed second.
“He really came out and swam fast,” Yanez said.
Although Glaudini finished fourth in the finals, he lowered his time to 4:32.62.
“I think Garrett did a great job,” said Yanez.
In the 200-yard freestyle preliminaries, Glaudini’s 1:41.26 placed third; in the finals he had a fourth-place 1:40.44.
Glaudini, junior Carlo Silva, freshman Brandon Powell, and sophomore Cory Davison had a second-place time of 1:40.17 in the 200-yard medley relay preliminaries and placed third in the finals at 1:40.43.
“I’m really excited to get all four of those guys back together next year,” Yanez said. “I’m excited to see the potential.”
Powell took sixth place in the 100-yard butterfly, both in the preliminaries with a swim of 53.26 seconds and in the finals with a time of 53.07 seconds.
“I think that’s a really huge accomplishment for any athlete their first swim in CIF,” Yanez said.
Silva was third both days in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking 59.62 seconds in the preliminaries and 59.22 seconds in the finals. His time of 2:04.35 in the 200-yard individual medley preliminaries placed 14th, making him the second alternate for the finals.
Powell, Silva, Glaudini, and Matteo Franchello were Ramona’s 400-yard freestyle relay team and their times of 3:32.55 in the preliminaries and 3:23.95 in the finals gave them tenth place in both. Although Franchello is an academic junior, he is an exchange student from Italy and will not return to the Bulldogs in 2014.
