Bulldog baseball misses chance for league championship in series’ final game

By Bill Tamburrino

Ramona beat Del Norte the first two times the teams met in Valley League play to guarantee a series win, but the Bulldogs needed a sweep of the series to win a share of the Valley League championship. The Nighthawks won the final game of the series 7-1 at their home field and in doing so earned the Valley League championship.

“They hit the ball and made the plays and their pitcher’s fastball was good enough to get by our hitters. It was their day on their field. They earned the championship. It was great that it came down to the final game of the season. We had a chance to win a championship on the final day of the season. We gave it a shot and they beat us,” said coach Dean Welch.

The Nighthawks scored first taking a one run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Ramona tied the score in the top of the third when Jordan Farhat hit his second double of the game and drove in Gage Canning after Canning singled.

Del Norte’s Stephen Xirinachs tossed a complete game for his team and scattered five hits and fanned five.

Kyle Wilson and CJ Broussard also stroked singles for the Dawgs against Xirinachs.

Rhett Williams got the start and took the loss as he gave up four runs on six hits and struck out three. Wilson finished the game on the hill and gave up three runs on six hits and struck out three.

The Bulldogs wore bright pink sox (baseball spelling) and arm bands as a part of their uniforms as a showing of support for Carla Schuler, the wife of Bulldog assistant coach Mike Schuler, who is waging a battle against cancer.

“My wife and I were very honored and touched by the team’s gesture. That is the kind of kids that we have in Ramona. That is what makes Ramona such a special community,” said coach Schuler.

The Bulldogs received a berth in the Division I CIF playoffs. The Dawgs got the No. 9 seed and will play the eighth seed, Mira Mesa in a play-in game.

A play-in game is a CIF game in softball and baseball where the winning team advances and the losing team is eliminated.
