Ramona’s Trainer: Uncommon

By Peter San Nicolas

d the pleasure of watching a movie this last week called “Undefeated.” This was a documentary set in the hot south of Memphis featuring the once losing high school football team, the Manassas Tigers.

They weren’t just a bad team. They were terrible, with a 5-95 record over the past 10 years. In this film, through football and coaching, young boys grew up to be men, not just any men but “Uncommon” men.

What made them Uncommon? What helped some of them go from inner-city casualties, juvenile criminals, and incorrigible poverty?

What helped them be Uncommon was an eagerness to learn, a desire for a better life, and a coach who cared. Coach Bill Courtney explains, “These kids come from abject poverty and lots of hopelessness and lots of loss and just all the cliché inner-city stuff that you see in the media and movies. These kids were those kids, and despite it they were ‘Yes, sir,’ ‘No, sir.’ They wanted to learn. They were just looking for someone to believe in them.”

When you’re knocked down, when you think there’s no hope, when your back is against the wall, what’s important is your character.  An Uncommon character, a character that challenges the fiber of your flesh, an Uncommon character that pushes aside immediate pleasure for future rewards.

Each week Coach Bill would give out a game- ball to the player who represented the “Uncommon” man. How will you be Uncommon this week?  It may be fitness and health related, or maybe it’s relational. It might be doing your very best at work for the sake of a job well done. The choice is yours to take the common easy route, or take the route of the Manassas Tigers and be Uncommon.
