Ramona Art Guild to sponsor silverpoint workshop

Ramona Art Guild will sponsor a silverpoint workshop with Vicki Walsh in the Ramona Library Community Room from 9:45 a.m. to 2 pm. on Saturday, March 23.

Walsh, a drawing professor at Palomar College, is renown for her immaculately rendered portraits. In her latest series, she uses silver and gold point to create detailed drawings upon which she applies layers of oil paint.

Silverpoint is a drawing technique that was used extensively during the Renaissance as an underdrawing for paintings and as a medium for fine drawings.

Walsh earned her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach in 1980. She also did a two-year program in biomedical illustration. She worked as a forensic medical illustrator, and at the age 50 pursued an MFA at San Francisco Art Institute.

“They teach you how to create a body of work and I found a voice there,” she said.

No experience is necessary for the workshop as silverpoint is a fairly easy and beautiful medium to work with, she noted. This ancient traditional skill requires some patience, “but who knows what areas could be explored with a contemporary expression.”
