Olive Peirce Middle School shelter open to Terrace Estate residents

By Maureen Robertson

Friday, Dec. 21—Approximately 13 members of Ramona’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) are going to each of the 218 units in Ramona Terrace Estates mobile home park tonight alerting residents they will be without heat overnight and possibly through the weekend.

American Red Cross has established a shelter at Olive Peirce Middle School for residents of Ramona Terrace Estates at 1212 H St. after an underground gas leak was discovered Friday. The shelter is at 1521 Hanson Lane.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Saul Villagomez with Ramona Fire Department said the department received a call Friday morning of a concentrated smell of propane. An investigation led to the discovery of the underground leak, he said at Ramona Terrace Estates Friday evening. Workers are expected to return Saturday morning to work on repairing the problem.

County Hazardous Materials and environmental health workers also responded to the mobile home park, where a 30,000-gallon propane tank was leaking underground. Nine residents in the area were immediately evacuated, Cal Fire said.

In addition to going to each alerting residents in all of the other units of the problem, CERT volunteers are shutting off valves at each unit and distributing fliers telling of the situation

The gas leak was stopped, and no one was injured and no property damaged, the county reported.

Residents in the park are expected to be without gas for at least the next 24 hours, and the shelter has been established because of cold temperatures expected overnight.

Ramona Terrace Estates residents are age 55 and older.

Red Cross volunteers were at OPMS this evening, but no residents had arrived. While residents do not have heat, they do have electricity, and some plan to used electric heaters and blankets.

For more information, residents should call 211.

The leak was reported to SDG&E on 12-20-12 by my mother. Repairs were thought to be complete on evening of 12-20-12. In fact they were not ! My mother was told was all fixed. She stayed there that evening woke with serious headache. Lucky to be alive !!! Due to the fact hers and many other lives were in serious danger. Because gas lines were still leaking. Sp# 131 was without gas or electricity until 1-5-13.
