Boys basketball drops games to Army-Navy, La Jolla Country Day
By Bill Tamburrino
Ramona High School hosted two Division IV basketball powers last week in the Dawg House as the Bulldogs returned to a full roster with the addition of players from the football team.
The Dawgs lost to the fifth-ranked Army-Navy and to defending CIF champions La Jolla Country Day. The Dawgs are now 0-3 on the season as they enter the Mount Miguel Tournament before holiday break and, after a week off, will play in the Tri-City Christian Tournament.
Size does matter. Ramona hosted Army-Navy Academy and lost a 76-47 decision to the highly- ranked Warriors.
The key factor in the game was the Warrior’s height advantage of which they took maximum advantage. Army-Navy out rebounded the Bulldogs 42-24 and limited the Bulldogs to just nine offensive rebounds as the Warriors grabbed 21 rebounds after missed Ramona shots. Seven-foot-1-inch Cheikh N’Daiye grabbed 12 boards and his 6-foot-6- inch teammate Kendrick Azubuike grabbed 10 rebounds. Five-foot-10-inch Alex Rogers led the Dawgs with four boards.
Four Warriors scored in double figures, led by Devin Watson who scored a game high 23 points. Freshman Marco Cobian came off the bench to lead the Dawgs in scoring with 12 points. Senior Zach White also registered in double digits by scoring 10 points. Ryan Heiar (4), Matt Lawler (4), Scott Stransky (2), Dylan Fieger (6), Rogers (8), and Hunter McHargue (1) all scored in the game.
Coach David Reichner was encouraged by his team’s play as he welcomed four new players from the CIF finalist football team. With only day of practice, Reichner was pleased with the team’s performance and its hard play.
“We just need a couple of more weeks together. Great things are on the horizon for this team, especially as they go into league play in January,” he said.
Reichner also had praise for the 3 point shooting of Cobian, White and Rogers. Cobian and White were both 2-for-2 from beyond the arch. Rogers was 2-for-3.
The Bulldogs got to a bad start against La Jolla Country Day and trailed 24-7 going into the second period. The Dawgs outplayed the Torreys for the rest of the game but they could not overcome the disastrous start and lost 77-69.
Stransky and Cobian shared the scoring honors for the Dawgs as both players scored 13 points. Heiar and Lawler also scored in double digits. Heiar contributed 12 points and Lawler added 11 points. White (3), Fieger (8), Windes (4), Rogers (3), and Calvin Harris (2) also scored in the game. Lawler led the team in rebounding as he had seven boards. Heiar hauled down six rebounds as Ramona only had 21 boards as a team. Rogers led the team with six assists from his point guard position. The Dawgs had 20 turnovers and forced La Jolla Country Day to turn the rock over three times.
