Bulldogs host JV volleyball tournament, 1-3 as team

Ramona High School’s girls volleyball program hosted the JV Fall Classic junior varsity tournament on Oct. 27 at the Epic Volleyball Center in Poway to raise money for the Bulldog volleyball program.

The Bulldog girls were more successful in raising money than the junior varsity did in play as the team  went 1-3.

Junior varsity coach Kyle Adelman noted that the Bulldogs actually had mixed success.

“A lot of things went well later in the tournament.  We definitely weren’t prepared for Poway, but a lot of things were clicking by the end,” he said.

The tournament attracted 20 teams, which is capacity for a one-day tournament at the Epic Volleyball Center. Ramona was seeded third in its four-team pool and finished third in the pool with losses to Poway and Santa Fe Christian and a win over El Camino.

The loss to Poway was by a 25-16, 25-4 score.

“We played Poway pretty slow,” Adelman said.

Santa Fe Christian defeated the Bulldogs in 25-23 and 25-19 games.

“I thought that was one of the best matches we’ve played all season,” Adelman said.

Ramona’s wins over El Camino were by 25-12 and 25-23 margins.

“We really rolled through that match,” Adelman said. “Got a lot of players playing time.”

Third place in the pool earned Ramona a berth in the silver bracket for elimination play, which consisted of one game to 25 points.

“We ended up getting kind of a tough draw,” Adelman said.

Steele Canyon was on the favorable end of a 25-21 score in Ramona’s first match of elimination play.

Torrey Pines won the tournament with a 28-26 victory over La Costa Canyon in the finals.

Ramona’s junior varsity consisted of five freshmen, two sophomores, and five juniors.
