Fire chief invites public to department’s open house on Saturday
By Karen Brainard
With October designated as Fire Prevention Month, Ramona Fire Department/Cal Fire will host its annual open house on Oct. 20 to educate adults and children about fire prevention and safety, said Battalion Chief Saul Villagomez.
The open house, free to the public, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station 80, 829 San Vicente Road.
Villagomez, speaking before the Ramona Municipal Water District board of directors during its Oct. 9 meeting, said fire engines, fire dozers, helicopters, and tools of the trade will be out for close-up views at the open house. Demonstrations and children’s activities will also be part of the event.
In addition, a safety trailer will provide the opportunity for firefighters to teach children about what to do in case of a fire, Villagomez said.
“We teach them how to hear an alarm or smoke detector, to roll out of bed, crawl along and find the nearest exit and also to go to the meeting place the family has already predetermined,” said Villagomez. “So there is a lot of teaching here to those young folks.”
Villagomez noted that Fire Prevention Month dates back to the Great Chicago Fire that started on Oct. 8, 1871.
October is about educating the public and providing such information as defensible space, weed abatement, and how to make a home fire safe, said the battalion chief.
In addition to firefighters from the Ramona Fire Department/Cal Fire and the Cleveland National Forest, Smokey Bear and representatives from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Ramona Community Emergency Response Team, California Highway Patrol, and San Diego Gas & Electric are scheduled to be at the open house.
Villagomez also noted that October is fallen firefighters month.
“We recognize those fallen firefighters across the nation that lost their life during time of duty,” said Villagomez.
