The ones near me practice target shooting and race small motorized toy cars for hours on end. During the 2003 fires, one stood in the street watching my husband fight the fire away from our house. When he asked for help, the fire fighter said "you're doing fine" and said he couldn't get in our gate. After asking again for help and opening the gate, we finally received some assistance. Even if they are, could you do their job? Probably not! I'm glad they have a garden, it's the green thing to do and if they are ever standing on the street corners seeking donations for a tractor you can bet I will contribute to that. I too am not thrilled with all the added on fees, but it is a small price to pay for the valuable service that the members of the fire departments provide to our town.
