Eric Barron hits winning streak in short course off-road racing
By Bill Tamburrino
While Ramonan Eric Barron works very hard to make a living, he lives to race in short course off-road racing.
He founded Eric Barron Motorsports, a competitive professional off-road race team. Barron, who has been racing for eight years, turned professional three years ago.
“I have been building off-road cars since 1991 and I come from a family of racers. My brother, Alec, races Indy cars and my dad raced drag racers,” he said.
Barron has been on a roll with recent successes.
“I have to pinch myself to make sure that this is not all just a dream,” he said.
Barron races on the West Coast circuit.
“The events are sometimes three weeks apart and sometimes four weeks apart. Every event has two separate races, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Winning one stage a year is very good,” said Barron.
The West Coast circuit has races in Utah, Reno, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and several in California. In his last three outings, Barron won one race in Utah on July 28, and two at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino on Aug, 4.
Racing is a family affair for Barron. Besides his brother and father, Barron’s wife, Renee, and his three daughters — Alissa, 9, Lindsay, 6, and Jenna, 3 — all support him by attending races when travel does not require a plane trip.
The races are 20 one- mile laps around a dirt track. They take about 45 minutes of skill and stamina to complete.
Short course off-road racing is a very expensive sport.
“I couldn’t compete without my sponsors. Toyota, LAT Oil, Ranch Trans Axle and Maxxis Tire have been very generous,” noted Barron.
The Ramona racer, who is on a winning streak, builds and services his own cars.
“I have been building my own cars from day one,” he said. “I started building play cars and worked up to race cars.”
