Jiu Jitsu team brings home medals from world championships

Twelve competitors from the Ramona Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (RBJJ) team competed in the Kids World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships, bringing home five world championship titles and 11 medals overall.

Over 900 competitors, from as far away as New Zealand and Brazil, converged on the Coussoulis Arena at Cal State San Bernardino to compete in the championships.

Competing in the Kids World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships from the Ramona Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team are, front row from left, Gabriel Kiddoo, Berlin Kiddoo, Alexis Sherman, Tyler Sherman, Adon Yoder, Ian Alexander, and Savannah Kiddoo, and in back row, Matt Mendoza, James Proctor, Coach Kevin Hosseini, Jesse Deaver, and Matthew Duvalian.

Bringing home first places in their divisions were Tyler Sherman, Nathan Kiddoo, Jesse Deaver, Matt Mendoza, and Berlin Kiddoo.

Also from the Ramona team were Adon Yoder and Ian Alexander, who fought in the same division and placed second and third, respectively.

Rounding out the RBJJ competition team with third places in their divisions were Alexis Sherman, Savannah Kiddoo, Matt Duvalian, and James Proctor. Gabriel Kiddoo, one of the youngest team members received a participation medal for facing tough opponents.

Coach Kevin Hosseini said he is proud of the team’s work and added that the Ramona Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team continues to make waves in the jiu jitsu community.

“I am proud of each of my students. Whether they win or lose, that doesn’t matter. What matters is they are getting out there and competing,” said Hosseini.

Jiu jitsu tournaments are full contact competitions. The fighters start from a standing position and use techniques to take their opponents to the ground where they use leverage and proper technique to control and submit with choke holds and joint-locks.
