Widening that portion of San Vicente Road is definitely a BAD IDEA as it will encourage people to drive faster on that portion of San Vicente Road.
People who respect the 50MPH speed limit will continue doing so, while others will drive even faster, up to 80 MPH. The result will be the same number of accidents, only worse in terms of injuries and deaths.
The solution is not in allowing people to drive faster. The solution is in reducing speed limit, educating, and sanctioning.
This portion of San Vicente Road should be limited to 45MPH, with the Sheriff department posted there from time to time with a mobile radar and issuing tickets.
"Time saving" versus "Life Saving": the choice is an easy one.
