Five teammates earn all-league volleyball honors

Five members of Ramona High School’s boys volleyball team received all-league honors from  Palomar League coaches.

Senior setter Garrett Adelman was a first-team Palomar League selection. Senior opposite hitter Travis May and senior middle blocker Kenny Lawler were named to the second team. Senior libero and outside hitter Caleb Nelson and sophomore middle blocker Matt Lawler received honorable mention designation.

“It’s the toughest league in the county,” said Ramona Coach Jeff Klauda. “Making the Palomar League team is a big deal.”

The league’s first team and second team had six players apiece.

“We had three of the top 12, which is pretty darn good,” Klauda said. “That was very cool to get that many guys on.”

Westview, which won the Palomar League and the CIF Division II championship, had three players on the first team and one on the second team. Poway had two first-team players and one second-team selection. Torrey Pines and Rancho Bernardo each had one second-team player. Mt. Carmel had no players recognized above the honorable mention level.

The all-league honor for Adelman was his third, as he was a second-team Palomar League selection in 2011 and on the Valley League’s second team as a sophomore in 2010.

“It was just an honor that was a long time coming,” Klauda said of Adelman earning first-team honors.

“He should have been made first-team last year.”

A school’s league record is often a factor in determining which player receives the final position at a specific level. Last year Ramona was 3-7 in Palomar League play and shared fifth – or last – place. This year the Bulldogs posted a 5-5 league mark.

“It was really nice to see Garrett getting some printed recognition,” Klauda said. “He always represented the team and the program in such a positive manner.”

Adelman was Ramona’s only all-league selection in 2011.

Ramona’s final overall season record was 22-18, including a CIF playoff win over Mt. Carmel and a loss to Westview in the CIF Division II semifinals.
