Memorial Day baseball tournament is a hit

Ramona Sports Association hosted its 30th Annual Ramona Baseball Invitational over the Memorial Day weekend at the PONY Baseball fields in Ramona Community Park. It was the first year the games were played under the lights.

Fifty-one teams from around the county played over the four-day event, including 11 teams from Ramona. The stands and fence lines were jammed with spectators. Players and spectators enjoyed what they agreed was beautiful weather and great baseball.

Vendors sold barbecue, Mexican food, coffee, jewelry, clothing, and sporting goods. Ramona High School graduate Lexi Hogan provided face painting.

“I’m going to Point Loma Nazarene College this fall, so I’m trying to earn some much needed money here this weekend,” said Hogan.

Two former PONY league players — Kevin Guglielmetti and Trevor Kerchner — assisted at the tournament, calling balls and strikes and working the base paths for the umpire crew. For Kerchner, it’s all about fun.
