Actually, cigarettes are the "gateway" drug. If your kid smokes, be alarmed, because kids that don't use drugs usually don't smoke either.

Use of drugs is not only dangerous to the user, it is dangerous to the community, too, since anybody who buys drugs and doesn't pay up, the gangs will shoot them down. Seems to happen in San Diego area about once a week, now, and that is just what is reported.

I can't help but wonder, though, if all this is going on and he talks at a public meeting about it, why haven't there been any arrests? Last year there was ONE, and nothing has been done since?

Odd. Only one mention in the article about the most prevalent gateway drug: Alcohol.
No mention of the 2nd most prevalent gateway drug: Tobacco.
Combined, these two, true gateway drugs kill more than all other drugs combined.

Glad to see SO many parents interested. Hopefully, they will each look in the mirror and realize their HABITS are the gateway - THEY are teaching their kids that taking drugs is just fine!

I am so tired of the discredited "gateway drug" notion. Beer can be a gateway drug. Heroin can be a gateway drug.

All it means is, a person likely to decide to experiment will try other substances after the first. It's always cannabis that gets the blame, ignoring all the beer in people's refrigerators.

Drug testing at home is key. Parents need to be proactive in keeping their kids drug free. It starts with parental awareness, and it's great to see a few hundred attended. Then it's about reinforcing the anti-drug message with your kids. Home drug testing also reinforces and empowers your teen to tell their friends that they can't try drugs.
