Athlete of the Week: Garrett Adelman – Team leader
By Bill Tamburrino
Garrett Adelman was very busy as a youth. He played soccer, youth basketball and even tried his hand at golf, but his fondest endeavor was going to The Dawg House and watching his older brothers play volleyball.
“I never played club or travel volleyball in middle school. It is too expensive but I knew that I wanted to play volleyball when I got to RHS,” said Garrett.
Garrett is a setter on the volleyball team but he can also serve, block and dig.
“With Garrett it is not a matter of statistics. It is his leadership,” said Coach Jeff Klauda. “He sets up his teammates for statistics. He is always focused and is always positive. He is our captain and he is our leader.”
Garrett has been selected to all-tournament teams and leads the team in assists. The all-Palomar League team has not been announced yet but Garrett could be all Palomar and all CIF.
Garrett knows the game and what to expect but he was caught off guard last week on Parents Night. His entire family was there to support him.
“At least one of my parents has made it to all of my games and both have been there most of the time,” he said.
Also on hand were his two brothers, Kyle and Trevor. Both played volleyball at RHS and Kyle is currently a coach for boys and girls volleyball.
After Garrett gave his mother, Stacy, a bouquet of flowers and shook hands and hugged his dad, Mike, and brothers, Coach Klauda made an announcement.
“Kyle, Trevor and Garrett all have worn number five for our team. After this season is over we will be retiring the number.” The entire Adelman family was surprised and elated.
“I attended volleyball games when I was in elementary school,” said Garrett. “My brother Kyle was an outside hitter. Trevor was a libero. I will never forget when Kyle was a senior and Trevor was a freshman they played together. My fondest memory is when I got to play on the same court with my brother Trevor his senior year when I was a freshman.”
Garrett has a 3.40 GPA and will attend college next fall and hopes to become a physical therapist. He plans on trying out for volleyball and he hopes to help coach at RHS.
When asked if he was surprised when his number was retired he laughed and responded, “Kyle, Trevor and I have joked about it and argued who deserved to have the number retired. We never expected it. We were surprised and honored. We are very close.”
Against Torrey Pines Garrett had 59 assists setting up Travis May for 21 kills and Kenny Lawler for 14 kills as Ramona beat the Falcons and won their 20th game of the season.
For his outstanding play and leadership, Garrett Adelman has been named the Ramona Sentinel Athlete of the Week.
