Hogervorst wins 2 individual races against Wolverines

Lucas breaks 100-yard freestyle school record

Ramona High School junior Rachel Hogervorst not only won her first varsity race in the Bulldogs’ April 24 Palomar League meet at Westview but won both of her individual races against the Wolverines.

Hogervorst had times of 27.35 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 1:00.46 in the 100-yard freestyle. She was actually part of three winning races, as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Danielle LaRosa, Hogervorst, Paulina Bernd, and Gina Lucas completed that event in 1:47.01 to take first place.

Ramona won two additional races in the Wolverines’ 103-67 victory. Lucas had a time of 1:59.04 in the 200-yard freestyle event and LaRosa’s time of 1:04.99 in the 100-yard butterfly not only won the race but also gave her a consideration time for the CIF meet.

Ashlee Holabird also earned a consideration time against Westview. She swam the 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.04 and finished in second place.

“I’m really encouraged with so many consideration cuts,” said Coach Jolyn Yanez.

Ramona’s second-place finishes also included the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the Bulldogs’ time of 3:56.64 was unable to meet Westview’s winning time of 3:53.57. Lucas led off that race for Ramona and completed her 100-yard segment in 53.25 seconds.

The leadoff leg of a relay race can be used for CIF qualifying times, and it can also count for a school record as was the case with Lucas’ swim.

Ramona’s previous school record in the 100-yard freestyle was 53.66 seconds, a 2010 mark set by Breann Stevens.

Yanez noted that 45 percent of Ramona’s individual swims produced best times.

“The girls took advantage of the fact that they were swimming in a fast pool,” she said. “The girls are really highly motivated, working together as a team.”

The Bulldogs will close their regular season Friday with a home meet against Classical Academy.
