Ramona High School sophomore Courtney Ford won twice — a running event and a field event — during the Bulldogs’ Palomar League dual meet at Mount Carmel High School.
Ford had a winning time of 13.91 seconds in the 100-meter dash and a first-place long jump distance of 15 feet 10-1/2 inches during the Bulldogs’ 92-44 loss to Mount Carmel on April 25.
“I was pleased with Courtney winning the long jump and winning the 100,” said Coach Sherri Edwards. “I thought that was pretty good.”
Ford also finished second in the 200-meter dash to her own teammate. Caitlyn Choy won that race with a time of 26.16 seconds while Ford’s time was 27.74 seconds.
The Bulldogs took first place in five of the 16 events against the Sundevils. Kelly Helman’s time of 16.72 seconds gave her the win in the 100-meter hurdles race while Brooke Brean cleared 5 feet to win the high jump.
Choy added a second-place finish to her day after a time of 1:00.49 in the 400-meter race. Kara Banegas was second in the shot put with a 32-foot 8-inch throw and third in the discus with a distance of 89 feet 2 inches. The Bulldogs took second and third in the pole vault with Courtney Jackson clearing 8 feet and freshman Kim Klarer vaulting 7 feet 6 inches.
Klarer was one of three Ramona girls to earn their first varsity point with a third-place finish at the meet. Sophomore Kelsei Freeman completed the 100-meter in 13.91 seconds while senior Katie Turvey had a time of 17.65 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.
Although Lauren Cortez was ill and missed the dual meet, she competed in the April 27 Escondido Invitational and finished third in the open 3,200-meter race with a time of 11:31.69.
The eligible Bulldogs went to the April 28 Dick Wilkins Frosh-Soph Invitational meet at El Capitan High School. Banegas threw the shot put 31 feet 9 inches to take second among sophomore girls.
Ford’s long jump of 16 feet 6-1/2 inches was a personal record and tied for second among sophomores, and her time of 13.00 seconds placed third in the sophomore open 100-meter dash. Ford, Freeman, Caroline LoPresti, and Guasti had a time of 53.85 seconds to take third in the sophomore open 4×100 relay race.
Anna Mazzola’s time of 5:42.88 gave her third place in the sophomore open 1,600-meter run. Claire Hagan was fourth in the sophomore discus throw with a distance of 89 feet 2 inches.
The league meet will be held next week at Poway High School. Preliminaries are May 8 and the finals will be contested May 11.
