Ramona man, 63, arrested in 94-year-old woman’s death

A 63-year-old Ramona man has been arrested for the murder of 94-year-old Mary Jean Eskridge, sheriff’s Lt. Larry Nesbit with the department’s homicide detail reports.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s department, Gary Allen Thomas was arrested Wednesday afternoon and will be booked into San Diego Central Jail for one count of murder.

Eskridge was found in her home in Ramona Terrace Estates at 1212 H St. after fire department paramedics responded to a medical alert alarm at her home about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. After observing “obvious signs of trauma on the body,” paramedics called the sheriff’s department, Nesbit said.

Thomas was arrested as a result of the investigation into the murder of Eskridge, Nesbit said.

“We know that Ms. Eskridge and the suspect lived in the same mobile home park,” reads the statement from Nesbit. “However, as this investigation is ongoing, no further information will be released at this time.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the homicide detail at 858-974-2321/after hours at 858-565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-TIPS (8477).

Members of Eskridge’s family who arrived at Terrace Estates mobile home park early Tuesday afternoon said Thomas was similar to a caregiver for their mother as he drove her places, picked up groceries and checked in on her. Eskridge led an active life, they said, and attended dances at the Terrace Estates’ clubhouse, played bridge and loved going to the casinos.
