RHS softball shuts out 2 teams, improves league record
By Bill Tamburrino
The Ramona High School girls softball team improved its record to 12-4-1 as they beat Serra and Westview and lost to Rancho Bernardo. The Lady Dawgs are now 2-1 in the Palomar League.
The Lady Bulldogs shut out Serra 3-0 in a non-league game. Kailey Hill came one pitch from a no-hitter. Hill limited the Conquistadors (10-7, 3-1) one hit as she struck out 10 in seven innings. She drove in the first run of the game in the second inning.
The Lady Bulldog offense amassed eight hits. Kristina Barrameda, Adrianna Johnson and Julie Ward all had two-hit games. Jazmin Simone and Kenzie Wright also hit safely in the game.
Ramona got off to a fast start and cruised to a 10-0 victory over Westview High School (13-5, 0-3) in a Palomar League game. The Lady Dawgs scored three runs in the first inning and seven runs in the second inning in a five inning game shortened by the mercy rule.
Ramona ripped 12 hits in the game, five went for extra bases. Hill blasted two home runs in three trips to the plate and drove in four runs. Amber Davis ripped two doubles as she went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Ward and Johnson turned in 2-for-3 performances. Kenzie Wright also stroked a hit in the offensive barrage.
Hill scattered four hits and recorded five strikeouts as she picked up her second shutout in two outings.
“The Palomar League title will get down to a three team race. Rancho Bernardo, Torrey Pines and us,” said assistant coach Corey McDonald before the showdown with Rancho Bernardo.
What most thought would be a pitchers’ duel between S. White and Hill ended up being a slugfest.
Rancho Bernardo (15-5, 2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings but the Lady Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the third to score two runs. Jazmin Simone reached on an error and Hill and Davis delivered back to back singles. KK Melgoza drew a walk for an RBI and Kenzie Wright drove in a run with an infield grounder.
It appeared that the Broncos had put the game away with four runs in the top of the fifth but back came the Lady Dawgs.
Ally Harvey delivered her second hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning when she led off with a double. Ward reached when she was hit by a pitch. Harvey and Ward scored on two errors to make it a 7-4 game going into the final frame. RB scored in the seventh to make the score 8-4.
Back came the Lady Dawgs. With one out Kenzie Wright reached on an error. With two down Julie Ward singled to drive in Melanie Gale who was running for Wright. Barrameda drove in Ward with a double. The game ended with the tying run at the plate and Barrameda on second.
Harvey, Hill and Davis all turned in two hit performances for the Lady Dawg offense. Jazmin Simone and Johnson also delivered hits for the Lady Dawgs. Ramona stranded 11 base runners in the game.
The Lady Dawgs host Torrey Pines on Friday in a game that will have an effect on the Palomar League pennant race.
