Athletes of the Week: ‘Bagel boys’ play to each other’s strengths
By Bill Tamburrino
The only two seniors on the varsity tennis team got off to a fast start in 2012. John Shupe and Tyler McDonald teamed up to show the underclassmen how it is done as the duo went 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0.
“In tennis we call it a bagel when a player or doubles team beats their opponent 6-0,” said Coach Doug Failla. “The Zero is a bagel, so we are calling John and Tyler the Bagel Boys. I hope that the name sticks and they continue to hang bagels on their opponents.”
Shupe and McDonald are the team captains. Shupe started the season by introducing his teammates to the San Pasqual squad in the pre-match introductions.
“They are good leaders,” said Failla. “They have all of the qualities that I want in a leader and a captain. They work hard, they are competitors and they are great teammates. They complement one another very well on the court. They play to each other’s strengths and they work well together.”
For their efforts and leadership, John Shupe and Tyler McDonald are this week’s Ramona Sentinel Athletes of the Week. Sorry, boys, no bagels go with the award.
