Schirer scores season high 28 points in Bulldog loss to RB

Coach David Reichner’s Bulldog boys basketball team played well on the road but lost to Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo in Palomar League action. The Bulldogs are 7-15 overall and 0-6 in league play.

In Ramona’s 72-63 loss to Mt. Carmel, the two teams were tied at 14 at the end of the first period. The Sundevils then got hot and outscored the Dawgs 23-11 in the second period. That was the difference in the Jan. 31 game.

The two teams played evenly in the third quarter, again scoring 14 points apiece. The Dawgs outscored The Mount 26-21, but it was not enough.

Jonathan Schirer paced the Dawg offense. The senior forward scored 23 points and dished off four assists. He blocked six shots on the defensive side of the court.

Kwayde Miller scored 14 points and grabbed five boards. Travis Stevens continued his steady play. He led all rebounders with 11 boards, scored 9 points, had five steals, blocked two shots and had two assists.

Chris Durham scored 9 points and had two assists. Ryan Heiar (3), Jordan Farhat (2), Zach White (1) and Matt Lawler (4) also scored for the Dawgs.

The Bulldogs played their best game in Palomar League play against Rancho Bernardo. They trailed 21-17 after one period of play but had their best quarter of the season as they outscored the Broncos 28-19 to take a 45-40 lead into the locker room.

The two teams played evenly in the third period and Ramona led 62-58 going into the final eight minutes. The Broncos rallied and took a 6-point lead in the final minute.

Ramona made a comeback attempt and Jonathan Schirer hit a 3-point goal with six seconds left on the clock to make it a 1-point game. Ramona was out of time outs, however, and Rancho Bernardo did not have to inbound the ball, and time ran out.

Schirer had a monster offensive game. The 6-foot-5 senior forward scored a season high 28 points and hit four 3-point shots. He hit 12 of 13 free throw attempts. He also played well on defense as he blocked four shots.

Stevens also played another solid game as he scored 9 points, dished off three assists, blocked four shots and grabbed six boards. Miller scored 8 points, grabbed six rebounds, blocked a shot, had a steal and contributed two assists. Heiar contributed 6 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Zach White scored a season high 8 points. Durham (4), Farhat (4), Lawler (4) and Hunter Rowe (2) also scored in the game.
