Athlete of the Week: Quiet athlete speaks loudly on the basketball court

By Bill Tamburrino

Travis Stevens is quiet by nature. He lets his play do his talking for him. And last week his play spoke loudly on the basketball courts.

It is a wonder that Stevens is playing at all. He broke two bones in his right leg on June 21 and that cost him all but one quarter of the football season. He had won the starting quarterback job and was doing well in passing league. He was on the watch lists for a scholarship.

He rehabbed his injury and played the final quarter of the season finale and did well.

Stevens admits that he has yet to get to full strength. “I would say that I am about 85 percent physically.”

Stevens competed in baseball and swimming in youth leagues but concentrated on football and basketball at Ramona High School.

He was home schooled until his junior year but played football and basketball at RHS his frosh and soph years. He has a 3.0 grade point average and plans on attending college and majoring in civil engineering.

He is also active in the Boy Scouts of America and hopes to become an Eagle Scout in April. He officiates youth basketball on the weekends.

Stevens had an outstanding week for Coach David Reichner’s Bulldog basketball team.

He had a big night against Poway High School on the road. The senior guard scored 9 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He hit two shots from beyond the 3-point line, scored in the paint and dished off one assist.

Stevens had his best game of the year against the Torrey Pines Falcons. He scored a game high 21 points and hit three three- point goals. He grabbed nine rebounds for the second straight game. He dished off five assists. On defense he had five steals and blocked a shot.

For his efforts Travis Stevens is the Ramona Sentinel Athlete of the Week.
