Son of actor Ryan O’Neal jailed for alleged battery in Ramona home

Actor Ryan O’Neal’s oldest son, already facing possible prison time for a DUI crash near San Diego Safari Park, is behind bars today for allegedly battering his wife at their Ramona home on New Year’s Eve.

Griffin Patrick O’Neal, 47, is in custody — in lieu of $10,000 bail — at the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence, according to online jail records.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, a family member made an emergency call to report a disturbance involving someone `”drinking too much’” at the O’Neal home in the 2400 block of Garnet Mine Trail, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Melissa Aquino.

“Upon further investigation and through witness statements, it was determined that Griffin O’Neal was being aggressive towards his spouse,’’ Aquino said.

It was unclear if his latest arrest would delay or otherwise affect his sentencing — set for Jan. 10 — stemming from the head-on collision he was involved in last summer.

O’Neal pleaded guilty to DUI causing injury and being a felon in possession of a gun in connection with the Aug. 2 wreck.

About 1 p.m. that day, O’Neal’s car veered into oncoming traffic on San Pasqual Valley Road and smashed into a van. Both O’Neal and the other driver received hospital treatment following the crash.

Toxicology tests determined that O’Neal — at the time on probation for a 2007 DUI conviction — had amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana and Xanax in his system when the collision occurred, according to prosecutors. Police also found several guns and ammunition in his crumpled car. He was arrested a month later.

Following O’Neal’s guilty plea, in which he also admitted to a 1992 conviction for shooting into his ex-girlfriend’s unoccupied vehicle, authorities dismissed charges of possession of rock cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Defense attorney Heather Boxeth told a judge that her client, who has a preschool-age son, was trying to come to the aid of his 26-year-old half-brother when he got behind the wheel the day of the accident.

O’Neal faces anywhere from probation to four years in prison when sentenced for the DUI crash, prosecutors said following his plea in November.
