Athlete of the Week: Elias Jauregui served double duty
By Bill Tamburrino
Elias Jauregui had a tough job to do. He already had a job of his own that was important, and that he did well enough to earn All Palomar League honors.
He was asked to step in for an injured Kirk Kaliszewski, the leading rusher in the Palomar League and a first team All Palomar League selection. Jauregui not
only did the job — he did it well. For his efforts Elias Jauregui has been selected as the Ramona Sentinel Athlete of the Week.
Jauregui had the third best rushing night in the North County in the opening round of the CIF Playoffs by running for 118 yards on 15 carries against Lincoln High School. He also led the Bulldog defense in unassisted tackles. Jauregui played less than three quarters, as he left the game after he suffered a late hit out of bounds after a 16-yard gain that turned into a 31-yard gain after the penalty yardage was added.
Jauregui scored Ramona’s lone touchdown in the third period on a 21-yard run. He gained every yard in the five-play drive and had runs of 18, 22 and 21 yards during the drive.
It was his second straight stellar performance at running back. He rushed for 148 yards against Westview High School on Senior Night at the Dawg Pound.
Jauregui did not play any defense his frosh or junior varsity years and only played sparingly at wide receiver as a junior. He didn’t even think of playing running back until he was pressed into action due to injuries.
“Coach said that the team needed me to try to play running back and I welcomed the challenge,” he said. “I had no idea how difficult or demanding that it would be. I am glad that I could help the team on offense.”
Jauregui considers himself a defensive player. His coach thinks differently.
“Elias is not just a defensive player. He is a complete football player,” said Greg Fernandes, running back coach.
A lifelong Ramona resident, Jauregui is the son of Elias and Terri Jauregui. Both are Ramona High School grads.
