Bulldog girls end tennis season at league tourney
By Bill Tamburrino
Ramona High’s varsity girls tennis season ended when the team participated in the Palomar League Individual Tournament.
Ramona sent three players to the singles tournament. Dayna Lake defeated Cyndy Tran from Mt. Carmel in two tough sets. Lake recorded scores of 6-3 and 6-4 to eliminate Tran. Lake then faced Jana McCord of Rancho Bernardo, who was the top seed and had a first round bye. McCord advanced by posting scores of 6-0 and 6-0.
Taylor Romero faced Heidi Wang of Westview in the opening round. Wang advanced with scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Kelly Gallagher received a berth in the tournament but lost by default.
The Lady Dawgs sent three doubles teams to the Palomar League Individuals Tournament. Rachel Vaca and Savannah Goodson opened the tourney with a victory over Chabra and Wade of Mt. Carmel in a highly contested set. Goodson and Vaca prevailed by winning a tie-breaker in the first set 7-6 and then won the second set 6-3. Goodson and Vaca lost in the second round to Bennett and Razavian 6-3 and 6-1 in the second round.
Hannah Kramer and Dallas Forbes faced Sciuto and Crivello of Poway in the first round and lost 2-6, 6-0 and 10-7 in the tie breaker.
Rebecca Vaca and Lauren Dunker picked up valuable experience as the freshman and sophomore duo lost to Holtzman and Warcup of Poway 6-1 and 6-2.
In tennis, the team playoffs are divided into divisions but the singles and doubles play combines all divisions. That is a disadvantage for the Lady Bulldogs. The Palomar League is the toughest league in the North County if not the CIF.
In some sports like wrestling and track they have CIF individual championships in divisions and then have a Masters Meet. That is not the case in tennis.
