Cameron Elston is all-around cowboy at Industry rodeo

Cameron Elston not only won the tie-down roping event at the Industry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo, but he also won All-Around honors.
“It was good,” said Elston. “Got a good start to the season this year.”
The rodeo year for purposes of championship standings begins Oct. 1, and at the previous weekend’s Kern County Fair Rodeo in Bakersfield Elston split fourth and fifth place to earn $107.
Elston won $1,846 for his first-place time of 8.4 seconds at Industry this month.
The All-Around championship is given to the cowboy who earns the most money in at least two events. Because no cowboy at Industry placed in more than one event, Elston earned the All-Around title.
“It was nice,” Elston said of winning the All-Around.
The All-Around title at Industry carried a $1,000 bonus.
“I definitely needed it,” he said.
Elston competed in team roping with fellow Ramona cowboy Marcus Battaglia but missed his steer. Elston and his horse, Matt, competed in the Sunday afternoon tie-down roping performance.
Clint B. Cooper of Temecula led the rodeo with a time of 9.5 seconds entering the Sunday performance.
“I knew what I had to beat,” Elston said. “I got on him real good. I had him down pretty fast.”
That gave Elston the luxury of tying the calf with two wraps. The calf must stay tied for 6 seconds after the cowboy returns to his horse.
“I made sure I got the check,” Elston said.
Cooper’s time stayed in second place for the rest of the rodeo. Battaglia split fifth and sixth place in the tie-down roping with a time of 9.8 seconds to earn $446.
The Industry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo also saw Matt Deskovick post a time of 8.9 seconds on his steer wrestling run to place fifth and earn $504.
