Patent-pending game is popular at Boys & Girls Club
Youngsters at the Ramona Boys & Girls Club are enjoying a table game created by inventor Robert Norrell of Ramona.
“This is the funnest game in the whole club,” said an enthusiastic kindergartner, Salvador Sanchez.
Norrell has loaned the game to the youth club, said Simone McCune, site supervisor of the Ramona Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.
The patent-pending game does not yet have a name. It is a combination ping-pong, ski ball-type table game, with scoring goals and traps, along with color-coded rubber balls and a multi-function paddle.
The paddle is flat on the top for the air game, and club-like on the bottom for the ground game. The ground game consists of using the club end of the paddle to roll a ball along the table’s surface through a channel surrounded by traps that drop into the table. The purpose is to get the ball to roll into a scoring goal on the other side without falling through a trap.
“The air game is kind of like ping pong, with players hitting the ball over the raised panel in the center, and into a separate goal,” said McCune.
The game can be played in a variety of ways, she said. The physical characteristics of the table and the rules of the game create a flexible format that is suitable for ages 5 through adult.
“This game has been extremely popular with the members of Ramona Boys & Girls Club,” said McCune.
“I like this game because it is physical and challenging,” said third-grader Joseph Daigle.
“I like this game because there are a lot of different ways to play it,” added Andre Jovien, a fourth-grader.
