RHS tennis struggles in Palomar League matches
By Bill Tamburrino
The Bulldog tennis team opened Palomar League play and lost to Westview (6-2, 1-1) and Mt. Carmel (7-2, 2-1) on the road. Ramona is now 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the Palomar League.
Ramona lost to the Westview Wolverines 16-2 on Sept. 27. Ramona’s number one singles player, Dayna Lake, and number one doubles team, Savannah Goodson and Rachel Vaca, were the only Lady Bulldogs to score.
In singles action, Lake went 0-6, 0-6 and 6-1. Taylor Romero turned in scores of 1-6, 1-6 and 1-6. Kelly Gallagher went 0-6, 0-6 and 0-6.
In doubles action, Goodson and Vaca went 1-6, 3-6 and 6-1. Hannah Kramer and Dallas Forbes registered scores of 1-6, 2-6 and 0-6. Rebecca Vaca and Lauren Dunker went 1-6, 1-6 and then played well in losing a tie-breaker 6-7.
Senior Savannah Goodson is playing well and is still a relative rookie to the sport. Goodson didn’t decide to play tennis until the summer after her freshman year. After playing softball for two years, she decided to concentrate on tennis. When she expressed an interest, her mother, Shelley, started giving her lessons. Shelley played at RHS, was a scholarship tennis player at the University South Alabama, and is a tennis professional and coach.
Savannah caught on quickly and made the number one junior varsity doubles team with Nikki Rogers. When mom isn’t available, Savannah plays with her sister, CoCo, when CoCo is in town.
Primarily a doubles player, Savannah has played some singles matches. Her regular partner is Rachel Vaca. The two are friends as well as tennis partners.
“The entire team gets along very well on and off of the courts,” she said. “We all like to have fun and we all like to compete. Coach Failla teaches us to do both.”
Savannah plans to attend college and play tennis in college. She wants to be a high school teacher and coach.
Ramona improved but lost to a strong Mt. Carmel team led by Lamella Belgica 12-6 on Sept. 29. Belgica and the Sundevil number one doubles team of Lea Antrobus and Debbie Hoang posted scores of 6-0 across the board to make the difference in the match.
Ramona’s doubles teams picked up 4 team points. Goodson and Rachel Vaca won two sets with scores of 0-6, 6-0 and 6-4. Kramer and Forbes picked up a point with scores of 1-6, 0-6 and 6-2.
In singles action, Lake took two sets by turning scores of 0-6, 6-0 and 6-1. Romero carded scores of 0-6, 2-6 and 2-6. Gallagher went 0-6, 1-6 and 0-6.
