‘Better service’ tops ‘better food’ in Our Town contest at youth club
Members of the Ramona Branch of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego split into two teams to form two restaurants during Our Town theme week at the club.
In the friendly competition, one restaurant, the Little Amigos, served Mexican food, while the other, the Fat Panda, served Chinese and Japanese cuisine. Club members designed their restaurant’s store front banner, posters, and menus.
Club members were assigned different responsibilities within their restaurants. Some were cashiers, some hosts/hostesses, waiters/waitresses, and kitchen servers. All worked together to throw away trash, and clean tables and floors.
Members and their families prepared food from their restaurant’s menu ahead of time and brought their dishes to the club.
Menu items at the Little Amigos restaurant included: chips and guacamole, bean burritos, beef tacos, quesadillas, beans, rice, salsa, and Mexican drinks like Jamaica and horchata.
Menu items at the Fat Panda included: orange chicken, teriyaki chicken, fried rice, chow mien, sushi, and fortune cookies.
Half of the members from each group were given club dollars to buy food with, while the other half ran the restaurants. As members finished their food, they picked up their shift at the restaurant so the others had a turn to eat.
“When voted upon by members, it was said that the Fat Panda had ‘better food’ while the Little Amigos had ‘better service’,” said Simone McCune, supervisor of the Ramona branch of the youth club. ”Members and staff had a blast. Some parents showed up on their lunch break as well, and were served by their children.”
The youth club is in Collier Park at 622 E St. For more information about the club and its activities, visit the clubhouse or call 760-788-7564.
