4-H’ers prepare pigs for show
By Karen Brainard
Luther the Yorkshire Cross didn’t seem to mind getting shaved on Wednesday at the Ramona Junior Fair. Maybe it cooled him off in the 95-degree temperatures.
Klaire Olson, 11, with the Ramona Paisanos 4-H Club was keeping busy shaving her pig, Luther, in preparation for swine showmanship on Thursday. She said it takes 30 to 45 minutes to shave the 232-pound pig.
Her pen neighbor, 17-year-old Aubrey Canfield was helping out by spraying Olson’s shaver periodically to cool it off. Canfield had some free time because her pig, 277-pound Chevy, was napping.
Olson said she would be taking Luther for walks and hoping for the best at showmanship
“The key thing is to keep your eye on the judge and keep close to him,” she said.
But, she added, she never knows what to expect with a pig.
“The hard thing about pigs,” said Olson, “is you can work with them every day and they might not do well at showmanship.”
The Market Swine Show will start Thursday at 8 a.m. at the junior fairgrounds, 421 Aqua Lane. Swine
Showmanship and Swine Bred & Fed follow, with a break midday for lunch.
