A 23-year-old male bicycling with a group westbound on Walnut Street ran into a moving vehicle at the intersection of Davis Street around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.

School employees start school year at convocation

Ramona Unified administrators, teachers and classified staff were welcomed back for the 2011-12 school year at the district’s annual convocation on Thursday, Aug. 25. Although many employees had already been back on the job preparing for the new year, the convocation acts as the district’s official kick-off inviting the entire staff of RUSD to gather in celebration of the beginning of the new academic year.

Girls earn Miss California titles, qualify for National Miss pageant

Two Ramona girls won titles at the 2011 National American Miss California contest held in Anaheim.

Olivia Jensen won the Miss California Pre-Teen title and Alexavia Zetterberg was named Miss California Princess.

The National American Miss pageants are held in each state for girls ages 4 to 18 in five age divisions.

Ramona Senior Center will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5, for Labor Day. The center, a county-designated Cool Zone during the summer, is open at 434 Aqua Lane weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for legal holidays. The pool table is available for use any time except during Bargain Corner.

Ramona Honorary Mayor Sharon Davis accepts a certificate of recognition from the California Senate in honor of being District 36 Sen. Joel Anderson’s Woman of the Year nominee. Anderson nominated Davis for “exceptional leadership, inspiration and service to the citizens of Senate District 36.”

Board reduces new rural fire fee

A rural fire fee, recently signed in to California law, was reduced from a maximum of $150 to $90 annually by the state’s fire board on Aug. 22.
The California Forestry and Fire Protection Board also approved changes in the fee structure that could possibly bring the cost down to as little as $5 for some Ramonans.

Fall Festival discount ride tickets on sale

Discount tickets for the first Fall Festival at Ramona United Methodist Church went on sale Monday outside Albertsons and Stater Bros. supermarkets. They will be available outside both stores from 4 to 7 p.m. through Friday, Sept. 2, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The tickets also are available inside Albertsons, at the Ramona Chamber of Commerce office and at Dynamic Discounts until Sept. 6 during normal
