Former Bulldog plays in collegiate all-star game

Ramona’s Alex Muren was chosen to play in the 2011 California Collegiate League All Star Game at Casey Stengel Field in Glendale on July 13.

Ramonans can view the game on Fox Sports at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationally and is the only live sporting event during prime-time hours since Major League Baseball is off for the day.

Muren was chosen to play on the CCL Nationals squad. The CCL is a collegiate wooden bat league that has eight teams in Southern California and Las Vegas.

Muren, who plays for the Glendale Angelenos, was hitting .276 with six doubles, a triple and a home run at press time. He has been used primarily as a DH during the summer.

He is listed as a pitcher/outfielder and is attending and plays baseball for California State University Northridge. Muren graduated from Ramona High School in 2009 and received about every honor possible as a Bulldog, including being a first team All American.

The sociology/criminology major has played at CSUN for two seasons and will return as a junior in the fall. As a freshman he was used primarily as an outfielder and hit .244. He started eight games on the mound and went 2-1 with a 5.76 ERA.

In 2010 Muren was used primarily as a pitcher and again went 2-1 for the Matadors with a 4.69 ERA in 13 appearances and five starts. His ERA was the fourth best on the squad. He hit .150 in limited action as a pinch hitter and designated hitter.

Next year at CSUN Alex hopes to possibly see more time in the outfield. He will be used primarily as a pitcher, but if he hits well he will see time as a DH and outfielder.

When asked if being a position player and a pitcher in college is physically demanding, he replied, “The coaches are very knowledgeable and understanding. They know that I can’t throw all of the time and they know when to take it easy on my arm.”

After the CCL All Star Game, Muren will have to shut down for the summer. He is having a minor skin procedure performed (a minor operation is one that is on somebody else), and it will take two weeks for the stitches to heal.
