Cub Scouts enjoy a week of space
By Dixie Pettit
Pacific Crest District Cub Scouts from Ramona, Julian, Warner Springs and surrounding areas gathered at the Ramona Junior Fairgrounds Monday for the start of their annual end-of-year camp.
In addition to familiar camp activities such as archery, crafts and “monkey bread” baked over hot coals, this year’s space-themed excursion brings in a twist of its own.
“Each year we have a camp,” said Cub Scout Day Camp Program Director Michele Cassan. “This year we are having a space theme, which hasn’t been done for about 10 years.”
The kindergarten through fifth-grade Scouts will spend the week learning about astronomy, robotics, citizenship, archery and other things that make summer camp memorable for so many. Space food and moon-crater cookies will be followed up by the boys learning the importance of physical fitness in the stellar realm.
Jake Malmquist and Cody Bailey found the totem table to be worth their undivided attention.
“This is the laser protection system,” declared Bailey.
“Look!” exclaimed Malmquist, brandishing an egg carton flat. “Solar panels for the satellite!”
“The volunteers this year have been incredible,” said Cassan. “We have some new people to Scouting that have really shown promise to be up-and-coming leaders. We were able to put this together in just eight weeks.”
Local agencies are sharing time and talent with the scouts to provide instruction from robotics from the Ramona High School Robotics Team to fitness from Ramona Fitness Center — and even first aid instruction is being provided by the Ramona Fire Department and Intermountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
