Marshal Thrasher earns Ramona High Male Athlete of the Year honors
By Bill Tamburrino
Marshal Thrasher is one of what is becoming an endangered species — a three-sport varsity athlete.
Thrasher has earned 10 varsity letters — two in football, four in wrestling and four in track. For his prowess on the gridiron, on the mat and on the track, he has been selected as the Ramona High School 2011 Male Athlete of the Year.
Marshal Thrasher is a hard worker and a leader. He has been all CIF in volleyball three times, All Valley League, All Palomar League, All North County and the team captain twice. In football, he was all league, all North County and team captain.
“I am just a competitor,” he commented.
“Marshal is a hard worker and a team leader,” said Damon Baldwin, head football coach and assistant track coach. “His enthusiasm is contagious. He did everything we asked of him and more. He played defensive end, linebacker, tight end, tackle and fullback. He did whatever it took for us to win. He is the same guy in track. He worked hard to get the team points. He is a team player in every sense of the word.”
“Marshal is a leader and a competitor,” said Steve Koch, wrestling coach. “He helps everybody on the team and then he coaches our Olive Peirce (Middle School) team and the club team. He helps students with severe disabilities. He always strives for perfection in all of his endeavors. He is an amazing individual. He will be successful. He is a winner.”
Competing in three sports is very time consuming the year-round, yet Thrasher found time to hit the books and earn a 3.03 GPA. His favorite class was peer tutoring. He also coaches youth football and wrestling. “I coach a lot.”
Thrasher will attend Cuesta Community College in the fall and then transfer to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He is undecided on a major but plans on playing football at Cal Poly to help pay for college. He plans on coaching and “being the best that I can be.”
His best experience competing in sports at RHS was ”being with my boys in football and my family for wrestling.”
Thrasher has quite a support group from his family. His parents, Staci and Jeron, and siblings Roah, Dalton and Jadean get to as many games and meets and matches as possible.
He said the best aspect of playing sports at RHS is: “It teaches you to be a man.”
His advice to incoming freshmen: “Life goes on, so don’t get left behind.”
Marshal Thrasher played three sports, was a leader, scholar, winner and a mentor. He is a little more than the 2011 RHS Male Athlete of the Year.
