Bulldogs beat Titans

By Bill Tamburrino

The Ramona Bulldog baseball team has played three teams that have been ranked teams in the county this season. They have beaten two of the three teams in their last two games of the regular season.

The Dawgs took those facts to the seeding meeting last Saturday and got the number five seed in the Division III playoffs.

Ramona will get a home game in the play in round and host the number 12 seed Canyon Crest Academy.

Ramona’s latest upset was a 4-2 decision over the Poway Titans. Ramona finished the season with a 17-12 record overall. The Dawgs finished in fourth place in the Palomar League with a 7-8 record.

“Poway really wanted the game,” said Coach Dean Welch. “It didn’t make a difference in the standings, but the game was big as far as going into the seeding meeting. Poway had beaten the number one team in the nation earlier in the year (Edison of Huntington Beach: The Chargers are currently the number two team in the state and are ranked eighth nationally) in the Lions Tourney. They went after us all the way.”

Beau Sulser (6-3) got the start and went the distance for the win. The junior righthander scattered five hits and held the heavy hitting Titans to two runs. Both runs came on a home run by Ryan Moreno in the sixth inning. Beau struck out seven.

The game was a pitching duel all the way. It was a scoreless tie going into the fifth inning when The Dawgs rallied to take a 3-0 lead. John James Battaglia led the attack at the plate. Battaglia drove in three runs in a 2-for-4 effort with a double. Michael Scodellaro went 3-for-3 and scored a run. Zach Adamos went 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Kevin Hagan went 1-for 4 and scored a run.

Ramona scored an insurance run in the seventh inning to slam the door shut on the Titans.

“We have played a tough schedule and we have beaten some good teams. We are ready for the playoffs. Anything can happen in the playoffs,” said Welch.
