Ramona High swimmer Glaudini wins individual medley race at league finals
By Joe Naiman
Ramona High School freshman Garrett Glaudini once again broke his own school record in the 200-yard individual medley during the Palomar League meet finals May 14 at Rancho Bernardo High School, and his time of 1:59.48 also won the race to make him the league champion.
Glaudini’s victory in that event was Ramona’s only first-place showing in the league meet. The Bulldogs, who had a total of 14 swimmers and no divers, finished sixth among the six teams.
“For what we had we held our own,” said Coach Frank Yturralde. “I thought we did very well for what we were able to put out there. This is a very tough league.”
The other five teams all had divers and were able to score position points in that event. Poway, the fifth-place team, had a 20-point edge over the Bulldogs.
Ramona still managed to win two of the five league dual meets despite not having enough swimmers to obtain maximum point opportunities.
“We go into these most of the time trying to get people’s individual times,” Yturralde said. “That’s our main focus for this meet.”
The league preliminaries, which took place May 12 at Mount Carmel, and the league finals gave Ramona’s swimmers two additional opportunities to post qualifying times for the CIF meet or to improve their qualifying seeds.
“They swam well,” Yturralde said.
On April 6 Glaudini swam the 200-yard individual medley against Torrey Pines in 2:01.35, breaking the school record of 2:07.53 set in 2006 by John Higginson. Glaudini’s time in that event May 6 against Mount Carmel was 2:00.49, and eight days later he became the first Ramona swimmer to break two minutes in the race which involves 50 yards apiece in the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle.
A swimmer can only participate in two events at the CIF meet even if he posts qualifying times in additional events. Glaudini also has automatic qualifying times for the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle races, and he will compete at those events in the CIF competition. Glaudini’s time of 4:48.50 in the 500-yard freestyle placed fifth at the league finals.
Glaudini also swam the backstroke in the 200-yard medley relay, in which Ramona’s time of 1:43.47 placed third at the league meet. Carlo Silva swam the breaststroke, Alan Williams handled the 50 yards of butterfly, and Collin Torsak was in the pool for the freestyle portion.
The four swimmers who earned a qualifying time for a relay race do not need to be the four swimmers who compete at the CIF meet. Levi Landon, who swam in the preliminaries but missed the league finals due to a leadership recognition luncheon that Saturday, has posted a faster breaststroke time than Silva and was given that role for the Bulldogs at the CIF meet.
Ramona qualified for the CIF preliminaries in all three relay races. Glaudini, Ted Dean, Williams, and Torsak had a fourth-place time of 3:34.10 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.Nathan Creswell, Dean, Spenser Jones, and Zach Lane swam the 200-yard freestyle relay at the league finals and finished sixth with a time of 1:40.22.
Williams has automatic qualifying times for the CIF meet in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly. His backstroke time of 56.66 seconds at the league finals placed fourth and was his best time of 2011 in that event. Williams placed fifth in the butterfly with a time of 54.05 seconds in the league finals.
Torsak has an automatic qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle and placed fourth at the league meet with a time of 22.87 seconds. He has a consideration time for the 100-yard freestyle, and at the league meet his time of 50.96 seconds in that event placed seventh.
Landon qualified for the championship finals in the 100-yard breaststroke although he was unable to compete in that race. Silva also qualified for the finals in that event and finished seventh with a time of 1:05.80. Landon and Silva both have consideration times in the breaststroke. Silva also swam the individual medley at the league meet, qualifying for the consolation finals and finishing 15th with a time of 2:21.67.
Dean has consideration times in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. He swam the butterfly at the league meet, qualified for the consolation finals, and took 12th place at 1:00.15. He also swam the 50-yard freestyle at the league meet and also took 12th place, posting a time of 24.30 seconds.
Creswell has a consideration time in the 100-yard backstroke. His time of 1:01.87 in the consolation finals gave him 13th place.
Lane qualified for the consolation finals in two events and placed 16th in both.
He swam the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.42 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:29.40. Landon qualified for the 200-yard freestyle finals.
The swimmers who advanced from yesterday’s CIF Division II preliminaries will return to Del Norte High School for Saturday’s CIF finals.
