Judge sentences Ramona man who fired shots to one year in jail
By Neal Putnam
A Ramona man was sentenced Tuesday to one year in jail after he pleaded guilty to negligently discharging a firearm in his house, sparking a standoff with sheriff’s deputies in February.
Carl Wayne Jones Jr., 43, has a projected release date of Aug. 27, according to the sheriff’s department. He received credits of 132 days already spent in jail including time off for good behavior.
Jones was placed on three years probation by El Cajon Superior Court Judge Charles Ervin, who ordered that he observe a lifetime ban on possession of firearms. On April 8, Jones also pleaded guilty to possession of an assault weapon and child endangerment since one of his children witnessed the event.
The dismissed counts include a second count of negligently discharging a weapon and two other charges of child endangerment involving the presence of his children in the house in the 12600 block of Galeria Circle in Ramona. The children and his wife were not injured.
The incident started Feb. 11 around 9:30 p.m. after sheriff’s deputies responded to a child’s call that his parents were arguing. Jones had locked himself in the bathroom and then fired a gun behind the bathroom door.
Everyone was evacuated from the house, but Jones refused to surrender. The sheriff’s SWAT team and Crisis Negotiations Team tried to get him to surrender, and after eight hours they threw chemical agents into the home.
Around 8:49 a.m. on Feb. 12, Jones came out of the house unarmed and was arrested. Multiple firearms were taken from the home. Sheriff’s deputies learned he had fired several rounds in the home before they arrived.
Ervin modified a protective order that stated he must have no negative contact with his children, and his wife was dropped from the restraining order. He is serving his sentence in the George Bailey Detention Facility.
