Softball bats sizzle, but team loses to Poway, Westview
By Bill Tamburrino
Despite having a torrid week with their bats, Ramona High’s varsity softball players lost to Poway and Westview High Schools in Palomar League action. Ramona is now 10-13 on the year and 1-3 in league.
Lexi Slater had quite a day at the plate against Poway High School. The Iowa State bound senior went 3-for-4, which all by itself is a very good day. She scored two runs and drove in five runs, again a very good day. She hit two home runs and a double, which means that she never stopped to talk to first base coach Robin Brainard and only stopped at second base once.
Kim Whelehon scored two runs as Slater drove her in after she was hit by a pitch in the first inning. Whelehon led off the fifth inning with a single and was again driven by a Slater round tripper.Kellsie Domnitz, who is going to Missouri Baptist University, also drove in a run. KK Melgoza hit a one out double in the fourth inning. Domnitz traded places with her with a two out double. Amber Davis also had a single for the Lady Dawgs.
Kailey Hill started on the mound and pitched three innings. Julie Ward pitched the final four innings. Both hurlers struck out two Titans.
Ramona’s defense turned a classic 6-4-3 double in the seventh inning when Slater fielded a ground ball and fed Whelehon a perfect throw at second base. Whelehon then fired to Domnitz at first to end the inning.
Ramona’s bats continued to sizzle in an 11-9 loss to Westview High School on the road on April 29.
Slater’s bat had to be stored outside the dugout because it presented a fire hazard. Lexi went 3-for-4 with a double and a home, drove in two runs and she scored three runs. She improved her batting average to .469. Davis had her best day as a Lady Bulldog. She also had a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Cassie Ford had two hits in four at bats with an RBI and a run scored. Ward went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Domnitz hit her second double of the week and Hill had a 1-for-1 outing. No Ramona batter struck out and three Lady Dawgs received a base on balls.
