Softball team returns to league play after 1 win, 1 loss

Ramona High’s girls varsity softball team beat Orange Glen and lost to Mt. Carmel early last week before getting a three-day spring break.

The Lady Dawgs return to Palomar League action this week.

Coach Antoinette Rodriguez’ team made the most of four hits and took advantage of the two-hit pitching of Julie Ward and beat Orange Glen High School on April 18 in a North County tournament game that was previously rained out. The Lady Bulldogs got all of their runs on two timely extra base hits.

Ward went the distance to pick up the win. The only run she surrendered was a home run to Salina Palmisano in the sixth inning. Ward struck out and walked four. Ramona got all of the runs that it needed in the top of the first inning. With two down, Lexi Slater and Cassie Ford reached on errors.

KK Melgoza delivered a two-run double and was thrown out trying to advance to third. Ramona led 2-0 until the sixth inning.

Kailey Hill led off the third inning with a single, but was stranded.

After Palmisano’s one out home run in the sixth, Ward retired the final five hitters to preserve the win.

The Lady Dawgs added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Melgoza led the frame with a single and Ward drew a base on balls. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch.

Amber Davis then hit a three-run home run to give Ramona a 5-1 lead.

Ramona lost to Mt. Carmel (11-5, 1-1) on April 19 at home 7-2. The Sundevils got an early lead in the top of the first inning by scoring two runs. The Mount added to its lead in the second with two more runs and led 4-0 going into the bottom of the second inning.

Ramona rallied in the second with two runs when Kailey Hill just missed a home run with a line drive double that drove in Julie Ward and Amber Davis.

Hill ended the day with two hits in four trips to the plate.

Lexi Slater also had a two-hit performance with a double. Davis had Ramona’s only other hit.

Hill pitched well but got little support from her defense. Ramona committed four errors and gave up four unearned runs. Hill struck out two Sundevils. The Lady Dawgs are 10-11 overall and are 1-2 in the Palomar League.
