Lucas sets 100-yard backstroke school record

Ramona High School sophomore Gina Lucas broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke during the Bulldogs’ 103-67 home loss April 13 to Rancho Bernardo.

Lucas didn’t even win her race, but her time of 1:01.07 eclipsed the previous school superlative of 1:02.54 set last year by Lisse Litka-Baughman.

“The race was tremendously exciting,” said Ramona coach Jolyn Yanez. “She was obviously disappointed with the loss, but it was kind of bittersweet.”

Yanez realized that the Bulldogs had little chance of defeating the Broncos, so she placed many of her swimmers in races other than their normal events.

That allows swimmers to seek CIF meet qualifying times in additional events, although they will be limited to two individual events at the CIF preliminaries regardless of the number of events for which they post qualifying times, and it also provides a physical and mental break from their usual regiments.

“It went pretty well,” Yanez said.

Lucas posted an automatic qualifying time for the backstroke, and her winning time of 24.96 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle was also an automatic time. Lucas fell short of Katherine Abbott’s 2008 school record of 24.80 seconds in that race but gave Ramona the first-place points.

Ramona freshman Ashlee Holabird won her first high school individual race. Her time of 1:06.84 in the 100-yard butterfly improved upon her consideration time in that event.

Madi Lanz had a consideration time of 1:14.28 which placed her first in the 100-yard breaststroke. Ellie Carrano swam the 100-yard freestyle for Ramona’s other victory, posting a time of 58.00 seconds. Carrano finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a consideration time of 2:08.55.

The Bulldogs are off for Spring Break and return to competition April 29 at home against Westview.
