Kovach sets 200-meter dash school record
By Joe Naiman
Ramona High School senior Zach Kovach set a school record in the 200-meter dash during the Bulldogs’ dual meet loss April 14 at Rancho Bernardo High School.
Kovach posted a time of 21.80 seconds, bettering the previous school record of 21.92 seconds set by James Rhodes in 2004.
“I was very excited. I’m very proud of him for doing so,” said Ramona head coach Allison Stang. “He just smoked through that 200. I was very impressed.”
Damon Baldwin, who is Ramona’s assistant coach for sprinters, worked with Kovach the day before the race.
“We made some adjustments on his block on Wednesday,” Baldwin said.
That likely made the difference in the following day’s race.
“He got out so fast on the start,” Baldwin said. “I’ve never seen him get out that quick.”
Kovach was responsible for three of Ramona’s four boys’ event victories during the Broncos’ 87-49 win. He won the 400-meter race with a time of 49.53 seconds, and Ramona’s 4×400 relay team of William Wenberg, Kovach, Matt Maple and Trevor Dotson won their race.
Ramona’s other win was in the shot put, courtesy of Preston Johnson’s throw of 50 feet 7-1/2 inches. Johnson finished second in the discus throw, but his distance of 127 feet 4-1/2 inches was a personal record.
Rancho Bernardo’s girls won 15 of the 16 events and prevailed by a 123-13 score. Ramona’s girls 4×400 team of Paige Conroy, Callie Guasti, Marla Gonzalez and Caitlyn Choy avoided the sweep and posted a winning time of 4:21.
Choy also gave the Bulldogs their lone second-place finish in an individual event; she had a time of 1:01.5 in the 400-yard race.
Ramona took both second and third in that event, as Amy Jordan completed the lap in 1:06.8.
Stang notes that several Ramona boys and girls set personal records despite the losses.
“We just outperformed ourselves,” she said. “They warmed up, they were focused, they came out, and they tried hard.
“All I can ask from them is what I requested from them the week before. I’m very happy.”
The Bulldogs are off for Spring Break and will return to action April 28 with a home meet against Poway.
