Bulldog golfers do well as team and as individuals
By Bill Tamburrino
“We had a phenomenal week. We won three Palomar League matches, shot a hole in one and took second in a tournament that had 16 of the best teams from San Diego, Riverside and Orange counties,” was coach Jerry Patenaude’s assessment of the golf teams achievements last week.
Ramona finished the week 12-5 overall and 5-3 in league.
The Dawgs started the week by playing in the 36-hole Maverick Invitational at Morgan Run Country Club in Del Mar on April 11. Torrey Pines won with a team score of 744.
Ramona shot 764 to beat third place La Costa Canyon (state champion in 2009) by 17 strokes. Ramona beat such powers as Bonita Vista, Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad, Poway, St. Augustine and Cathedral Catholic.
Joseph Fortunato and Christian both carded 148 for 36 holes. Ryan Graf turned in a 154. James Andrews and Garrett Arnold shot 157, and Brandon Barnum shot 171.
The Ramona team traveled to Double Tree Golf Course last Tuesday and beat Mt. Carmel 186-226 in a league match. Graf and Barnum shared medalist honors. Both shot an even par 36, and it was the first time they were medalists this season. Andrews shot 37. Fortunato shot 38 and Rajcic shot 39 in the win.
On April 13, Ramona beat Poway at Stone-ridge CC 194-204. Rajcic and Fortunato carded scores of 37 on the par 36 front nine. Fortunato used a seven iron to record a hole-in-one on the 186-yard par three seventh hole.
Graf shot a 39. It was the 14th straight nine hole round in the 30s for the freshman to set a new school record. Most amateur golfers never shoot a score in the 30s.
Andrews shot 40 and Barnum shot 41.
The Dawgs finished the week by beating Westview High School 193-205 at the friendly confines at San Vicente Resort. Fortunato was the medalist as he fired an even par 36. It was the eighth time that Fortunato has been the medalist this season.
Barnum pushed Fortunato with a 37 and Andrews shot 38. Rajcic and Tanner Angel both carded a 41.
The Ramona golf team is shooting well as a team and is getting some outstanding individual performances as they finish Palomar League action and gear up for the North County, CIF and state tournaments.
