Gabriel Hampton, a 32-year-old musician from southern Indiana who speaks with an unassuming, gravelly voice and wears a short-brimmed fedora and large-framed black glasses, came to Ramona three months ago for a new home, a new venue—and a girl.

Hampton will be bringing his modern yet soulful style of bluegrass and country music to the Ramona Bluegrass & Old West Fest.

Sentinel Reader Opinion

I would like to thank the Ramona Sentinel for getting the word out about the service changes proposed by our transportation provider, NCTD.

Route 386 (the Escondido/Ramona bus) was well represented at the public hearing last Thursday. Our community response to the “NCTD Proposed Changes Survey” caused the NCTD Board of Directors to take a closer look at their proposed changes in Ramona. Our turnout at the public hearing caused the NCTD Board of Directors to mention Ramona in their closing remarks.

Expect lots of changes to come at Big Apple Bagels on Main Street, now that it is under new ownership.

Bob Davidson, who purchased the franchise in February, brings 45 years of experience in the bagel industry to Ramona. He’s hard at work turning the store around as he looks to increase its staff, hours and menu choices.

Starting May 2, Big Apple Bagels will expand its business hours from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, keeping the same business hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays.

As students move from elementary to middle school, the focus on college and career readiness increases.

“OPMS is a marvelous example of a middle school which has taken college preparedness to heart,” said Dr. Robert Graeff, superintendent of the Ramona Unified School District. “With combined efforts of NJHS, ACE classes, AVID, collegiate flags on campus, college T-shirt days, campus video programs, and the principal’s strong leadership in this area, our middle school students are receiving a daily dose of collegiate vocabulary which is truly remarkable.”

Wondering what to do this weekend?

With gasoline prices what they are, Ramona area residents might think of staying in town this weekend. There’s certainly a lot of activity, whether it be entertainment or volunteer work—or a fun mix.

Specifics about each of the many events planned are listed in the Our Town calendar on pages 10-11.

ESP Summer Camp threatened by low enrollment

Parents wanting their children to participate in the Ramona school district’s Extended Student Program (ESP) Summer Camp may have to look elsewhere if more families don’t enroll by May 1.

About 49 children entering kindergarten through sixth grade are needed to make the program financially viable. As of Tuesday, the school district had 16 confirmed campers and another four expressing interest.
