Steer wrestling, calf roping and barrel racing jackpots slated for Saturday
Cowboys and cowgirls in town for the Ramona Rodeo this weekend can look forward to a second opportunity to compete in their sport.
Matt Deskovick, Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association steer wrestler who lives in Ramona and operates businesses here, is opening his arenas on Traylor Road for a Steer Wrestling Jackpot, Calf Roping Jackpot and Barrel Racing Open 4-D Jackpot on Saturday, May 22.
“We don’t have that many jackpots, and they’re fun,” said Deskovick, who held his first steer wrestling jackpot during last year’s rodeo.
During the first steer wrestling event in his arena last year, Deskovick injured his knee and was unable to participate in Ramona Rodeo competition, something he looks forward to each year. He plans to be in the Ramona Rodeo steer wrestling contest on Sunday. Saturday is reserved for his two arenas on Traylor Road off Highland Valley Road.
Owner of Catt Farm and Ranch Supply at 629 Main St. and Desko Construction, Deskovick has added barrel racing to his second annual event.
In addition, to add to the day’s family atmosphere he plans Pee Wee Stick Horse events. Children ages 6 and younger may look for stick horse barrels, pole bending, goat ribbon snatch and dummy roping.
The Steer Wrestling Jackpot will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the Calf Roping Jackpot. Barrel racing signups and practice runs will start at 10 a.m., with the Open 4-D Jackpot at noon.
Entry fees for all the jackpots are cash only, since the money will be split among the day’s winners. Steer wrestling and calf roping entry fee for two and a short is $150.
Barrel racing grounds fee is $7 for the first horse and $3 for each additional horse. Practice runs are three for $10 or one for $3, and Open Jackpot entry is $35
