Ramona tennis clinches third place in league
The Ramona High School tennis team finished its 2010 Valley League campaign in third place. The Dawgs finished the regular season with a 9-7 record overall and ended league action with a 6-4 record.
“We are peaking at the right time,” said coach Doug Failla. “We finished strong and won two key league matches to finish in third place.”
Finishing third in the Valley League could very well get the Dawgs a top four seed in the CIF Team Tournament.
“League champion Westview will definitely get the number one seed in Division II,” said Failla. ”Point Loma will be number two seed and Mt. Carmel should get the number three seed. We have a strong shot at the number four seed and San Marcos could also get seeded.”
The Valley League is the power in Division II.
Ramona clinched third place by beating San Marcos 12-6. Cameron Ruland set the pace for the Dawgs by turning in perfect scores of 6-0,6-0 and 6-0 in singles play. Tyler McDonald won two sets by going 1-6, 6-4 and 6-0. Daniel Streeter went 0-6, 2-6 and 6-2.
Tyler Davidson and John Shupe won three sets with scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2. Garrett Hatch and Chris Bowersox won two team points by posting scores of 6-4, 6-7 (2-7) and 6-4. Liam Swan and Chris Page went 3-6, 6-4 and 2-6.
Ramona finished league action with a 14-4 win over Orange Glen. Ramona’s doubles team won all nine sets in the match. Davidson and Shupe went 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1. Hatch and Bowersox went 6-1, 6-1 and 7-6 (7-3). Page and Swan went 6-4, 6-0 and 6-2.
In singles play, Ruland went 6-0. Andrew Rivera went 3-6 and 6-7 (6-8). Nicholas Brierton went 3-6 and 3-6. Tyler McDonald went 6-1. Streeter turned in scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-0.
“We will have a hard week of practice to get ready for the CIF team tournament in two weeks,” said Failla. “After that we will host the Valley League Individuals tourney. Cameron Ruland has a good shot of going on to the CIF individual tourney, and John Shupe and Tyler Davidson have a good shot at advancing in doubles play.”
